Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
